 The steps are as follows:

  1. Survey: Skim through the text and note the headings, subheadings, figures, tables, and summary paragraphs. This step provides an outline or framework for what will be presented. Identify ideas and formulate questions about the content of the chapter.
  2. Question: Generate questions about the content of the reading. Convert headings and subheadings into questions, and then look for answers in the content of the text. Other more general questions may also be formulated.
  3. Read: Start reading the text, but use the questions generated in the previous step to create a more active reading process.
  4. Recite: Describe what you have just read. This could be done out loud or in written format, but try to recall everything in your own words.
  5. Review: Come back to the material again to review, trying to answer the questions that you generated before.
The SQ3R method is a versatile study strategy that engages students during each phase of the reading process. It helps students glean as much information as possible from the text requirements from any class
